A place to recall & share all the good times
Expanding upon Brett’s posting regarding Brian’s musical choices. He took a perverse pleasure in “causing bonk” to fellow faire folk with the setup & teardown sound tracks. He oftern gave me previews of his newfound gems. I don’t know where he found many of them, but I know it came from many a late night on his PC exercising his amazing powers of Google-fu. He would search out the oddest covers of familiar songs–often chosen for a high likelihood of offending and/or confusing fans of the originals. That said, he did make sure to not play any of his loved Richard Cheese selections within Juli’s hearing–he knew she would beat him soundly for it. I believe that stemmed from an unfortunate reaction to a loungified variation of the Nutcracker Suite.
As for the truck, again he took a perverse pleasure in hiding it in plain sight–often flaunting rules that vehicles must not remain on-site. In all the years of doing this, we were only caught once and only because we had gotten lax in getting it covered. That oversight was addressed forever after and the truck always got concealed immediately after the Gypsy Cubes were erected. I also recall he loved sticking the truck in the most unlikely spots. I recall one faire where he wedged the Little White Truck (the ’95 Nissan Hardbody still in the family) in between two pine trees with probably less than a foot to spare. Nobody would believe he could do it and many were shocked at teardown to see it revealed there. I never doubted–I had already witnessed his awareness of the corners of that little truck.

Yes, it was the Nutcracker suite cover that prompted my visceral and negative reaction to this particular singer. Now I will probably play Richard Cheese on occasion just to think of Brian, the sick bastard!
Brian’s putting the little white truck between those trees resulting in one of the best things he ever said: “I saw this in a cartoon once… it just might work”.
“I saw this in a cartoon once…” that’s priceless.
Greg, that was one of his favorite phrases. I often heard it when we were on one of our road trip vacations. My least favorite occurrence was on Oahu when he decided he wanted to drive around the island and found this dirt track along the sea. So we are in this rental Jeep clinging to the edge of the cliff at an ever increasing angle when the track runs out. No where to turn around so he drove it in reverse to get us out. I truly thought we were going to end up in the surf.
He once located a singularly offensive cover, the Cardigans cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” It strained my ability to hear that song properly ever again.
For anyone that wants to hear the aforementioned abomination for your own ears, please follow this link. I take no responsibility for the ensuing suffering. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3gQSPMHPm0
I think the Cheesed version of Rock the Casbah pretty much sums up the album. Yes, I have the whole set! And yes, I, too, have been banned from playing it using anything louder than headphones.
I was going to post about “Brian music” too…damn, this says just about everything I was gonna say and more!
I just remember coming to a halt while packing up saying “What the hell am I hearing? What the…damn this is cool..but WHAT THE HELL AM I HEARING? I’m never gonna think about the Muppets without thinking of him. He had an amazing gift for music that made you doubt your sanity and the nature of reality!
