Memorial for Brian von KleinSmid

A place to recall & share all the good times

What the Hell is That?

One thing that I will always remember about Brian is his, well I won’t say “good”..um, eclectic? Yes, eclectic taste in music. Usually at the end of fair, blasting out of his truck’s speakers as we tore down the camp and prepped for the long slog home. There were many times I stopped packing and listened to a wailing guitar, or a synthesizer, or a barely-intelligible vocalist and thought: “What the Hell is That?” It sounds familiar but…OMG I know that song but I have never heard it done like THAT! I would go to Brian and ask where he found that version of the song in question, who the artist (again, a loose term sometimes) was and so forth. Brian’s depth of musical appreciation never failed to amaze me. I have no idea where he found some of his, ahem, gems, but I know that countless fair workers were entertained, shocked, offended, amused or generally confounded by what they heard from the gypsy encampment.  Also, on more than one occasion, I saw our fair neighbors look at one another and say: WHERE THE HELL DID THAT TRUCK COME FROM?! I swear it wasn’t there a second ago…I didn’t see it drive in…”.  heh heh, that little trick was also one of my favorites. Brian was a good guy, a great father and a wonderful husband (He told me so). The world is a sadder place without him.

The gypsy men, "hard at work".

The gypsy men, “hard at work”.

“Highway to Hell” only sounds right to me when there’s banjos.

Due to Brian’s Obsession with music all of it is in mp3 format on the computer. The trick will be for me to find it. You will be able to hear the music again though, I promise.

I will help you find the music. I also have it on my drives–so it will never be lost.
